Taxes are really high in EU. To earn 30.000 euros after taxes is a bit high and as a hotel personnel this is not even realistic in richer countries such as Germany or the Netherlands where the average salary after taxes is ~ 1700-2200 euros a month (~20-24.000).. Its more like 15-20.000 for a receptionist (after taxes and depending on age) and goes higher for other positions but not really much higher. The impression that Spanish, Portuguese or Greeks work less than the Northern European countries is really a myth. Recent statistics suggest that, In fact, they work much more and that is why they have higher growth rates in all three countries. For US is still valid but that holds for all Europe. Holidays are about 25 working days (1 month) aside the national holidays which are about 4-8 depending on the country you are in.
Life cost can really vary. Most Spaniards, Portuguese or Greeks own their own houses or live with their families, thus they pay no rent.
